Subscription fatigue
and why I want to break up with most of them
👋 Hi all,
A special welcome to all the 118 new readers since last week from cold and, at some places, still white Amsterdam ☃️. From today onwards, you will see some fantastic sponsors from time to time. I only support brands I would use myself.
Let’s get to it → today’s edition is about subscription fatigue, the battle of the Substacks moderation, and another twenty-four predictions in the most important domains of our age. Enjoy!

Issue #29
In February 2019, I tweeted something in which I predicted that bigger brands would feel the need to bundle their services. I was wrong, obviously. But five years later, I’m going to predict something similar again.
Biggest trend to watch for 2019-2020: Big companies will start bundling their services & products. We will see bundles with Spotify/Netflix/HBO etc, but this will also happen in retail, publishers and the food industry.

How many subscriptions do you currently pay for? I bet you have even more accounts if you count up the ones you share via friends or family. The average person had 12 subscriptions in 2022. Twelve 🤯 Imagine what that number would be in 2024; I guess it’s easily 15 by now.
With all the new services (streaming/websites/tools, etc.) over the last few years, we had to try them all. If that new TV show is only available via a particular streaming service, you get out your credit card again and tell yourself you will cancel after watching all the episodes. But you will forget this because that’s what happens.
You aren’t the only one. Fortunately for us, we see something happening, which is a counter-trend. This is normal since things go back and forth every 7-10 years—trends versus anti-trends. Remember the times when you paid for a single song on iTunes? 🎵
